Saltwater SCUBA Diving Trips

As a dive shop located inland, and with the nearest ocean access being about 500 miles away, we always get excited about saltwater diving. Saltwater diving offers a great variety of marine life for divers who like to observe underwater plant and animal behaviors in their natural environment.

So, how is saltwater diving different from freshwater diving? Well, one thing we should all note is that a diver's buoyancy increases in saltwater. This means more weight would be needed for diving in saltwater, as opposed to to freshwater. Also, saltwater environments usually have a greater visibility than freshwater ones. However, saltwater diving can also be more strenuous due to currents, deeper depths, and tidal variations. Although staying hydrated is crucial regardless of the water you're diving, the probability of a diver becoming dehydrated is more likely in warm, saltwater environments.

Typical saltwater diving includes oceans, seas, and coral reefs - where an abundance of wildlife inhabits. A unique feature that comes with night diving in saltwater is that some organisms in the ocean make their own light through a process called bioluminescence, which is extremely rare in freshwater.
