About Straits of Mackinac
The Straits of Mackinac are the short waterways between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas traversed by the Mackinac Bridge. The main strait is 3+1⁄2 miles wide with a maximum depth of 295 feet and connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
The Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Preserve maintains an underwater museum of more than a dozen historic wrecks. These shipwrecks, protected by the preserve, are time capsules that tell stories of vessels lost due to ice damage, storms, collisions, and groundings.
Explore a wide variety of sailing vessels and wooden steamers. These sunken relics offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, and their preservation is aided by the cold, fresh water of the area.
